Strike a Light is running a – Remembering together: Making a life history book course
A life history book is a homemade booklet compiled to capture memories and stories about a person’s life, whether to mark a significant birthday, a change in circumstances, the onset of Dementia or as a beautiful and creative gift for a loved one.
Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage will deliver a series of four workshops to learn how to create a life history booklet for a family member’s life. Sessions are from 10am-1pm every Thursday for four weeks in April 2017: April 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th at the Strike a Light studio based at Brighton’s Open Market.
Making a life history book can be an enjoyable and empowering activity for a person with dementia which may enable greater interaction and open up communication between someone with dementia and their carers, family and friends.
A life history book may be something that visitors can look through with a person, or it can be referred to by professionals to learn more about the person they are providing care for.
Uses:
* A distraction technique for refocusing during difficult symptoms
* A security tool when person is taken to unfamiliar places such as the hospital or care home
* Promotes well-being, validation and celebration of a person
* A bridge to the past
* Provides opportunities for pride and enhanced self-esteem
* Re-builds family relationships The workshops will include:
* Using old photographs, photocopies, maps, collage, text, printable resources and more, we will work together over the course of four sessions to create a beautiful, bespoke booklet which will celebrate the life of your loved one, helping them to remember happy times, key events.
* Memory triggers to encourage remembering of family and friends
* Reminiscence tips and techniques to support life history work
A life story book can enrich relationships and promote understanding and respect as memories fade. The course can only accommodate 8 participants to create a supportive atmosphere so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Strike a Light in partnership with Fabrica gallery hosts two free Heritage Open Days events in Brighton this week – Thursday 10th and Friday 11th September, part of our The Boys on the Plaque project.

During this special drop-in event, Fabrica will open it’s doors to the public for an afternoon of stimulating and engaging activities and exhibits to inspire new ways of considering our communities’ experience of the war. This free event will include creative workshops, heritage activities and screenings to explore personal memories relating to the war and the stories we were left with.
Guest speakers will include researcher and oral historian for ‘War Stories: Voices of the First World War’ Jo Palache, and Dr Chris Kempshall, Project Officer – First World War in East Sussex.
Visitors are invited to bring their own stories and keepsakes to share with volunteers and staff and contribute to our research project, which seeks to uncover the history of each of The Boys on the Plaque, as well as discovering the wider story of Brighton & Hove during WWI. A free afternoon tea, music and a warm welcome to people of all ages will be provided! Event Times

Led by local historian Dr Geoffrey Mead, this will be a unique, one-off Walking Tour of Brighton’s historic Lanes, exploring the history and changing social and architectural landscape of this area of the city in relation to the period of time around WWI.
Inspired by a selection of stories from local soldiers commemorated on a memorial plaque at the Holy Trinity Church, the tour will begin at Fabrica art gallery. This tour uses the WWI heritage project The Boys on the Plaque as a starting point. The tour will last 60-90 minutes and will take place on the streets of Brighton – sensible shoes and attire recommended. Event not suitable for children under the age of 12. Event Times

They’ll be answering all these questions and more with extracts from the archives and some fantastic science demonstrations. You will even get to make some items to take away with you!

Family and Fun Craft Activity – make a “Sweet Dreams are Made of These” pillow with hops and scented herbs. Dried hops are a traditional sedative and slumber aid whilst rosemary and lavender promote peacefulness. Bring your own dried herbs to add too.
Sew and decorate with ribbons, embroidery and buttons. Suitable all ages.
