Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has set up a new project website to support the Shalom Sussex – The Jewish Community in WWI to profile the contribution Jewish people in Sussex made during the First World War – both on the home-front and abroad on the battlefield.
Jewish people make up a small part of the Sussex demographic, and with partners and participants we have realised how little information is available about this topic. We seek to research, explore and share this hidden history.
The Orange Lilies project runs until July 2017, and we have free events and activities taking place throughout the rest of the project.
We have been uploading memories and research to our project website which we’d love you to view.
Visit and view our textiles banner about the impact of the Somme on the city, and a selection of films made by young people about the centenary of the battle in an exhibition of our work at Jubilee Library in the Youth area from now until 4th July.

We’ve been having a bit of a spring clean here at Strike a Light, and have changed the look and feel of our website.
It’s our first proper update since 2010! We think it’s cleaner and more fresh now. You’ll be able to find more functions, easier accessibility and a more obvious structure to it. We’re just rolling it out now, so bear with us whilst we check for glitches and what not, but hopefully they will be few and far between.
Social media is more obvious as it now sits on each page and you can catch up with our Twitter feed more easily. You can also see which themes are most popular on the Strike a Light site through our tag cloud. There are more photos, resources and text to look through too.
Get in touch if you have any comments or suggestions, we’re happy to keep on tweaking. And most importantly, we hope you like it!
